Bloomberg’s Tech Blog is reporting that Russian developer ZeptoLab has followed up its successful Cut the Rope franchise with its latest mobile game, Pudding Monsters — but can the freshman title spawn cartoons and plush toys like its predecessor?
Efim and Semyon Voinov, the Moscow-based twins who created both games, don’t seem too worried about it, despite peers like Halfbrick Studios and Lima Sky failing to spark a second time in the shadow of Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump, respectively.
“It’s going to be very different,” Lyalin said in reference to Pudding Monsters. ”We want to be a gaming company that’s not necessarily limited in what it can explore.”
While the Cut the Rope series has clocked more than 250 million downloads thus far, Pudding Monsters takes a different approach, presenting players with puzzles which involve “gooey cyclops creatures” that must be shifted and combined as they maneuver each challenge.
The developers plan to leverage the 50 million users actively playing Cut the Rope to make them aware of Pudding Monsters.
“We created a very powerful marketing platform,” Lyalin elaborates. ”We’ll be able to tell our audience, ‘Hey, there’s a second game from us, and you should try it.’”
Failing that, the twins have five more games coming in 2013 — a combination of new titles and yes, even more Cut the Rope.
